What is Candida?
Candida (also known as Candidiasis) in summary, is a bacteria that lives in everyone’s body, and helps balance out the ‘good’ bacteria with the ‘bad’. When too much of this bacteria is present, Candida Overgrowth becomes a big problem and our bodies start to suffer the consequences. Symptoms can vary from person to person when this does happen, but can include:
- Skin problems (eczema, rashes, hives, etc)
- Recurring Yeast Infections
- Watery eyes
- Leaky Gut / IBS / other digestive issues
- Sugar/sweets cravings
- Weight gain for no reason (or from those nasty cravings!)
- Body aches / muscle & joint pain
I don’t have all of these symptoms above, but I do suffer from from a severe case of Candida Overgrowth and it has led to fairly severe symptoms that I live with on a daily basis. I have been doing lots of research on this little bad boy, and let me tell you, I hate him!!! I was diagnosed with Candidiasis in my blood stream in 2014 via a Live Blood Anaylsis test performed by a certified Nutritionist. Western Medical Doctors generally don’t know how to diagnose this, and tend to stay far away from the fact that it exists in our bloodstream when we have had it for a very long time (also known as a Systemic infection). For this reason, it is important to find a good support group on this topic, as well as finding a Naturopathic/Alternative Therapy Doctor to work with you on changing your diet and implementing good vitamins and supplements to heal.
What Causes Candida?
- Too much use of broad-spectrum Antibiotics over the course of many years
- Long-term hormone therapy (or forms of birth control)
- Overexposure to Chlorine or heavy metals
- Use of steroids for a long period of time (think inhalers)
- SAD – Standard American Diet
Most people are prone to at least one of the items listed above, so you would think that most people have an issue with Candida, right? Well, more than likely, they do. Think about how many people you know with ‘stomach issues’ or ‘sensitive stomach’ or ‘IBS’. The older I get, the more people I meet with the same types of health issues that I am going through! This doesn’t mean that everyone has to become a hypochondriac – the list above basically means that if you’re searching for an answer that no Western Doctor can give you, and it revolves around your gut health… then maybe you should try looking at Candida Overgrowth as the cause. When you don’t put the good bacteria back into your body (via Probiotics), and you only kill off bacteria through use of Antibiotics, then it is a breeding ground for other bad bacteria to overtake your body.
I have changed my diet since 11/17/2014, and I no longer eat any processed food, sugar (even fruit), gluten, dairy or any foods with a high glycemic index (basically with a high sugar content). It has been extremely difficult and emotional for me and for Nick – he has been my rock through this whole process. I found that one of the best ways for me to handle the detoxing and challenges of dealing with Candida is to share my experiences with other people and spread awareness as well. You are welcome to follow my Candida blog ‘The Candida Free Kitchen‘. I will also be doing posts relating to Candida and gut health on this blog, too, so you can get as much information as possible on the subject!
